After breakfast, take a short boat ride to the Γles de Los β a scattered archipelago just off the coast of Conakry that served as a holding and transit point during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Explore the islands and learn about their deep and sobering history. Return to the mainland in the afternoon for a guided city tour including Conakry's vibrant local markets, key colonial-era landmarks, and a visit to the Guinea National Museum (subject to opening hours).
Depart inland toward the Sierra Leone border. En route, stop at the Voile de la MariΓ©e β Guinea's famous Bride's Veil waterfall β for photos, a short walk, and a welcome blast of cool mist. Continue to the Pamelap border area for an overnight at a local guesthouse, positioning us perfectly for an early, smooth crossing the following morning. Driving: approx. 3.5 hours.
Early breakfast and a smooth morning border crossing into Sierra Leone. Arrive in Freetown by midday, giving us a relaxed afternoon to settle in. Optional afternoon visit to the famous Cotton Tree and a browse through local markets β an easy, gentle introduction to one of West Africa's most charismatic capitals. Driving: approx. 4 hours.
After breakfast, take a boat excursion to Bunce Island β one of West Africa's most significant and haunting slave trade sites. Explore the crumbling ruins of forts, warehouses, and slave-holding areas, and reflect on the history of millions of lives changed forever on this small patch of land. Return to Freetown for a full city tour including the Cotton Tree, colonial buildings, and the cultural heartbeat of the capital.
Morning visit to the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary β one of the most important wildlife conservation projects in Sierra Leone, home to over 100 rescued chimpanzees. Learn about rehabilitation efforts and observe these extraordinary animals at close range. After lunch, depart eastward through Kenema, Sierra Leone's diamond region, for a brief introduction to the local diamond industry before continuing to Bo for the night. Driving: approx. 4 hours.
Depart Bo and drive to the Bo Waterside border crossing into Liberia. Cross into Liberia and continue to Robertsport, arriving by midday with time to explore this peaceful coastal town beloved by surfers and travellers. Afternoon options include swimming on the beach, exploring the rusting Tamaya shipwreck just offshore, or simply soaking up the barefoot atmosphere of Liberia's most beautiful shoreline.
Morning at leisure in Robertsport β one final swim, one final sunrise, one last look at that shipwreck. Transfer to Monrovia in the afternoon (approx. 2 hours). Upon arrival, enjoy a guided tour of Liberia's capital including the Liberia National Museum, local craft markets, the Presidential Palace area, and Providence Island β where freed American settlers first landed in 1822 to found the nation.
Drive north to Gbarnga and immerse yourself in real Liberian daily life at the Gbarnga Central Market β an extraordinary sensory experience of local food, traditional crafts, and fresh produce traded in a centuries-old rhythm. Continue 30 minutes to the beautiful Kpatawee Waterfall, set in lush green forest β perfect for swimming, a short hike, and photography before settling in for the night at the charming Kpatawee Hotel.
